Baseline Environmental Studies
Baseline environmental studies related to the Project Definition and
Environmental Assessment (PDEA) aspect of the Floodway Expansion Project
consist of several study tasks designed to provide baseline environmental
information required to support the Project Environmental Impact Assessment
(EIA) and to identify data gaps / information deficiencies. These EIA
supporting tasks include:
- assessment of terrestrial and socio-economic conditions in the regional
study area;
- evaluation of fish habitat at the Floodway Outlet at Lockport;
- consideration of fish stranding in the Floodway;
- assessment of existing terrestrial and aquatic conditions along the
Floodway Channel;
- mitigation strategies to define conceptual options for
resolution of downstream impacts;
- hydraulic studies of upstream and downstream impacts;
groundwater investigations including:
- installation of wells;
- inventory development of wells;
- permeability tests;
- baseflow measurements;
pump tests;
- evaluations of blowout potential; and
- refinement of groundwater modelling.
Information obtained from each EIA supporting task
will assist in the
on-going development and refinement
of the Floodway Expansion
Project Description,
development of mitigation strategies,
and
final evaluation of Project
environmental impacts.
