The Environmental Impact Assessment of the proposed floodway expansion will include an assessment of socio-economic impacts. This portion of the assessment will focus on understanding and assessing the potential effects of the project on people, including effects on:

  • personal, family and community life and health,
  • economy and business,
  • resource use and recreation, and;
  • infrastructure and services.

The socio-economic assessment will include:

  • identification of socio-economic issues,
  • description of the socio-economic baseline,
  • review of related experience,
  • assessment of the nature and extent of socio-economic impacts (associated with project construction, floodway maintenance and floodway operation during a flood event), and;
  • suggested measures for mitigation and compensation of projected impacts.

The assessment of impacts will be carried out for six impacts zones, each experiencing different types of project related effects.

As part of the socio-economic effects assessment interviews will be conducted with people and organizations who may be affected by the project. The purpose of these interviews will be to describe the current socio-economic characteristics of the project area and understand how the project might affect people in the region.
